This painting depicts a scene on the River Hull near to the oilseed-crushing mills at Stoneferry. These mills, with their distinctive five sails which were fitted by the Hull millwrights Norman and Smithson and designed and patented by Hooper, were the property of Mr Dibb in 1796. The boat seen from the bow sailing on the river is a sloop-rigged keel.
